What If Nothing Has Gone Wrong?
For the moments when everything feels a little off
Have you ever felt like your life isn’t where it should be, or where you thought it would be?
Maybe you thought you’d be a little further along by now. Maybe you thought your plans would go differently. You look around and it feels like everyone else is ahead of you.
And then the thought creeps in: Did I mess something up?
It’s subtle, but it’s heavy. Because once that thought is there, it’s hard not to start building on it.
We tend to interpret not meeting our expectations as proof that something is wrong.
I’ve started to think of this as Nothing Has Gone Wrong Theory.
When your life doesn’t look how you expected it to, it doesn’t automatically mean something has gone wrong. It might just mean things are unfolding differently than you imagined.
Because whether we realize it or not, we create timelines for where we think we should be and where we want to be. And then we compare those timelines to other people’s. Our friends, our peers, even people online we barely know.
And somewhere along the way, we start to treat different as failure.
But you’re not comparing your life to reality. You’re comparing it to a version that only ever existed in your head.
And when you look at it that way, of course it feels like something is off.
But a different timeline doesn’t mean a worse one. Slower doesn’t mean you failed. Unplanned doesn’t mean you’re off track.
I noticed myself doing this recently.
I always thought I’d have more things figured out by this point in my life. That I’d feel more like an adult. That I wouldn’t question things as much. That I’d be on a clear path.
Instead, I found myself rediscovering my creativity and getting back to writing.
And while part of me trusts that things are falling into place the way they’re supposed to, another part of me keeps thinking about the time I spent not writing.
Where would I be if I hadn’t stopped?
It’s a small thought, but it turns into a bigger one quickly. Like maybe I got off track somewhere. Like maybe I’m behind.
If you look back, there are probably moments in your life that didn’t go according to plan. Things that felt like setbacks at the time. Delays, detours, decisions you weren’t sure about.
And then later, they led you somewhere you couldn’t have predicted. A different job, a different routine, a different version of yourself.
Not everything works out perfectly, and not everything has some big, clear meaning tied to it. But not everything that feels wrong in the moment actually is.
Sometimes it’s just something that doesn’t make sense yet.
When that thought shows up, that something has gone wrong, you have a choice in how you respond to it.
You can keep following it and let it turn into a bigger story about your life, your timeline, and everything you think you should have figured out by now.
Or you can leave room for another possibility. That nothing has gone wrong.
You don’t have to force yourself to believe everything is happening for a reason, and you don’t have to spin it into something positive right away. You just don’t have to assume the worst meaning either.
When I notice myself thinking that I’m behind, I’ve started asking, according to who?
And when I catch the thought that this isn’t how it was supposed to go, I try to bring it back to something simpler. This is how it’s going right now.
Sometimes that alone takes some of the pressure off.
And when everything starts to feel bigger than it actually is, it helps to zoom out a little and remember that this might not be the full story. It might just be a moment inside of it.
I don’t always have the full picture figured out, but I’m starting to see that I don’t need to. I just need to give things more time to unfold.
And maybe nothing has gone wrong. Maybe you’re just not at the part where it all makes sense yet. Maybe this is just where you are right now.
